Scenic & Historic Dell Rapids
Dell Rapids Slide Production Wins National Honors
Determination to complete the project paid off in many ways. “Scenic and Historic Dell Rapids” was viewed by many packed houses at the Dells Theatre, as well as by students in all the Dell Rapids Schools. Moreover, it was shown to numerous other groups in the state and received outstanding reviews everywhere it was shown. But, the ultimate honor came when the project won national recognition from North America’s most prestigious historical organization, the American Association of State and Local History (AASLH). The organization annually seeks outs and evaluates achievements in state, provincial, and local history in the United States and Canada. The local projects are first screened by state and regional chairpersons, and if deemed worthy of national consideration, are sent on to the national selection committee, which is composed of history leaders from the United States and Canada. The national committee met in June at the national headquarters in Nashville, TN, and the Dell Rapids Historical Council received some great news in July. In September 1993 Craig Kumerfield and Roberta DeVaney were presented a Certificate of Commendation at the AASLH annual awards banquet in Columbus, OH.
The Historical Council (now the Dell Rapids Society for Historic Preservation) was extremely proud of the production and felt that with its broad scope and comprehensive nature, it was the only one of its kind. It developed in the community an awareness of and deep appreciation for the town’s rich history.Go Back to Intro
