Megan Project for Children's Books by Marcy Anderson (2nd Grade Teacher)

The Second Grade at DRES was chosen as the recipient for the Megan Project. The Megan Fund for Children's Books was started by Megan’s family in memory of Megan Hoisington, who lost her life in a car accident in July of 2005, just days after her wedding. She was a second grade teacher who loved teaching and had a real passion for children and their books. She was always on the lookout for a new book and had a good start to her own library. At the time of her death, her family decided a fitting tribute would be to set up The Megan Fund for Children's Books. Knowing what limited funds teachers have available to supply their classrooms, the purpose of this fund is to buy children's books for classrooms in order to help instill the joy of reading at a young age.

Early this spring the second grade at DRES was presented a collection of beautiful hard cover books from Megan’s family. We divided the books up in three groups and each class spent a week with each group of books. We read them, discussed them and did projects with them. We learned many lessons from these books. The biggest lesson we learned was from Megan's family... the gift of the joy of giving. We wanted to let the family know how much we loved the books so we wove a basket to hold all our thank you notes to the family. We just didn’t have all the words to show our thanks and since we know "a picture is worth a thousand words" we made a video to show our gratitude:
